Clean Compass Inc. aims to promote environmental justice and sustainable behavior through community outreach.
As a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, Clean Compass Inc. has a clear mission.
Clean Compass works toward creating a positive, sustainable impact on local communities, especially in regard to environmental equity. While my independent research on the connection between air pollution on stroke risk, as well as an exploration of pollution prevalence in Fairbanks, Alaska, have prompted me to first become involved in community events, my curiosity, passion, and determination have propelled me to continue expanding the breadth of Clean Compass’s impact. Following high school, I wish to continue working alongside changemakers of the South Bronx and promoting sustainability amongst my peers.
While volunteering with the Westchester Parks Foundation and completing a Green Internship, I participated in plastic pollution cleanup and invasive species removal from numerous local parks and waterfronts. As a passionate leader in this program, I guided groups of community members through a series of water chestnut removal initiatives and presented the necessity of community involvement to protect the natural world at a press conference for the foundation.

In tandem with the leadership of South Bronx Unite (SBU), I was an active participant in community events, such as organizational discussions and the Little Amal Arts Festival. These events fostered a sense of unity amongst residents while amplifying the voices of frontline community members, underserved groups who are often neglected and silenced due to rampant environmental racism. During these experiences, I was grateful to interview a number of leaders of change in New York City, such as SBU’s Executive Director Arif Ullah.

Over the past several years, I conducted an independent research study. I read over 80 papers, independently secured my mentor, composed hypotheses, completed statistical analyses in SAS, and drew conclusions. The evident pollution-induced health effects that I uncovered in counties of New York led me to fundraise in my community to provide asthma relief in the South Bronx, culminating in the donation of 100+ portable inhalers.
